My paintings are essentially about people. Even in the still-life paintings, though often devoid of people, there is an implicit human presence; somebody has arranged the flowers, left the scissors or knife – someone has engaged with the items shown. It is an insight into this person’s world.

Other paintings are focussed on human interaction. The relationship between people may be questioned. As in real life, we may think we know, but in truth can only surmise.

Since working as Artist in Residence at Opera North, based at the Grand Theatre, Leeds, I have found much to inspire.

During rehearsals, the experience at Opera North has shown me that the performers with the director, debate meaning in the words employed and they use many skills to present this to the audience. I find the interaction between the drama, the music and the players very interesting and feel privileged to have the opportunity to see so many facets of the production.
